*He smiles.* Surely, you are not a servant, milady. No, thank you. *He looks around the room, rather thoughtfully.* My, you have managed to gather an interesting crowd of people here. Most distinguished. I'm afraid I hardly fit between these great lords and ladies. *Smiling apologetically.* I am very sorry, I did not introduce myself. My name is Rumerin. I live in one of the smaller mansions near the gate to the Bazaar. I received your invitation and thought I'd come, though I did have my doubts you would want to see so lowly a merchant. *He bows.* "Why thank you, Rumerin. It seems the best way to get to meet our neighbours.
I hope you are successful in your trading?

Validus smiles, the magic in his eyes swirling in an almost hypnotic pattern. There is no assault on any mind when he speaks... the pattern is just somehow soothing, as is his voice. You wouldn't mind calling a servant to get me another one of those lovely fruits, would you? "Of course." He summons a wine waiter and asks him to bring another firefruit for the guest. The waiter bows and walks off, returning with the requested fruit. He offers them wine in addition.

*He raises an eyebrow at her unpoliteness in not giving her name. Maybe she expects him to guess? How rude.*
Yes, I agree, and such charming neighbours they prove to be, too.
*He nods.*
Successful enough to call some small fortune mine, if not a tenth of the daily costs of keeping such an estate as this. I am sure this feast must have cost more than I make in ten years- but ah, these are matters not to be discussed on a party! Forgive me, it is the merchant in me speaking. Yes, yes my business is fine, but it must be ever so dull to you.
*Smiling*
Is there no dancing at this party?

Thank you, good sir.
Validus accepts both wine and fruit with a smile and silently begins on both of these, again savoring the flavor as he waits. He obviously will not start a conversation.

Oh, please forgive me - we were not introduced. My name is Alathea. My apologies for not saying so beforehand."
She smiles, embarrased.

*He bows again.*
Charmed to meet you, my lady. The name suits you. Don't worry about it, I am much too crude a merchant to notice any tiny, unintentional lapses on your side, you must have a lot on your mind.
*Smiling broadly*
Ah! Now that is very good to know. I do hope you will save me a dance, milady. It would be such an honour and the greatest pleasure.

"As you wish, Rumerin. Now, if you will excuse me I have to ensure other guests needs are satisfied."
She curtseys slightly and moves away, smiling.

Of course, of course. Thank you ever so much.
*He bows and takes a sip of his wine. His grey eyes reflect her walking away, then they turn to the Vestran. The smile never reaches his features, but it is definitely there when he leans against the wall and watches, listens.*

Validus nods and turns his gaze to the man with mirror eyes. He smiles and watches him. He doesn't bother to hide the smile or the look in any way. He quietly eats the fruit and sips the wine as his gaze moves on to other members of the party.

*He eventually sits down in a corner with another glass of excellent, undoubtedly insanely expensive wine, idly wishing it were a regular mug of black coffee. He nods and smiles politely at Validus' stare and smile, and then goes back to looking around, wondering whether Thiska is going to show up to this party. Seems a bit dull for her standards, but you never know. Or Alcyon- he hopes not. He holds his glass rather than sipping it. Most nobles here ignore him, they leave him alone because they know he is a merchant, new money, not rich like them, not powerful like them, not noble like them. He gives a friendly smile to a fat woman in a heavy red robe with a purple feather in her complicated coiffure, and as she throws her nose up in the air and waddles away on short fat legs, her behind swaying like an overweight duck's, he is still smiling, pondering how easy it would be to bring her to her knees and stick her soul in a jar. Oh... This woman might be an interesting present to Alcyon for the next Feast of Light. In lieu of Thiska, so to speak. These thoughts are petty pleasures for one with other concerns, of course, but pleasure nonetheless. His face remains unchanged.*

The party continues. After some while, the quartet begin to play music appropriate for dancing - generally formal dances, no square dancing or other spontaneous dances.
The partygoers shift to the sides as some couples do take to the floor.

*Rumerin smiles and walks over to Alethea. He bows to her.*
My lady? Will you please do me the honour...?

Alathea smiles and accepts his hand.
"Of course, sir."
She moves towards the dance floor with him.

*He looks positively delighted when he starts dancing with her- he is not a bad dancer, he knows all the steps and never steps on her feet, but he has an interesting style of dancing: he leads without seeming to do so, even to Alethea it feels like there is either no lead at all, or like she does it herself.*
