"Hehe, I know that look. You've never been to Tyr before, have you? Well, welcome newcomer. Watch your purse, watch your throat.
...oh, you wanted to know a thing or two about the place? Well, this is Tyr, the Free City State. Yeah, free. No slaves here, unless you count the people who still serve for little to no cost because that is the only life they knew.
The Sorcerer King Kalak is dead. No one thought it was possible, but he's gone now. Good old Tithian took his place and released all the slaves, making Tyr the only city in all of Athas that doesn't use slaves legally. Hamanu, the Lion King of Urik, sent his armies, and good Tithian, our liberator, turned that army back. Yeah, Tithian sure was a swell guy... gone now. No one knows what happened to him. In fact, the people who helped him take down Kalak have all pretty much disappeared too. Strange times, these, strange times.
Anyways, the politics of this place is in a mess. The Templar are busy dealing out justice in the name of the Council of Advisors, who rule now that Good King Tithian is gone. The Council is too busy to really check on the Templar, who are just as strong now as they were when Kalak was ever around. Mobs and murderers are everywhere, and the only thing you got to worry about in your new freedom is your life and wealth. You can even be sold to some random fellow in Draj if you don't watch out.
It ain't all bad, though. You can do just about anything here. You just gotta keep an eye on where the guard is and another on where everyone else is.
Wait, you want to know about Athas too? Where've you been hiding? Ah well.
Athas is a dead world covered in silt and ash. They say there used to be huge pools of water, as far as the eye could see. Heh, all there is now is the sea of silt. No water there. The Defilers burnt this world with their crazy life stealing magics. The Sorcerer Kings came and brought order, though they're all pretty twisted individuals. Only that king up north, I forget his name, is very friendly these days. The one in charge of Kurn. Anyways, there is only one or two real forests. Everything else is gone. Water is life, life is precious, and iron is worth more than life. Keep a strong arm... and a good head on your shoulders."
