(Julia is met in the foyer by a porter.)
"Good day ma'am. May I help you?"

Goodday. I wanted to speak to someone about how to set up a school.

(The porter appears a little taken aback by this. He thinks for all of twenty seconds before replying, and when he does so his voice is hesitant.)
"The best person to talk to would be the Vice Principal - or perhaps the Bursar. Between them they deal with the administration of the Academy.
Or maybe talk to the Principal first?"

*She thinks.*
I wouldn't want to interrupt Mellinore over this. I'll talk to the Vice-Principal. Is she in?
*Isobel looks at the man, purring slightly.*

(The porter nods.)
"Come this way please ma'am."
(He leads her into the premises to the offices, knocks and opens the door into the Vice-Principal's outer office, manned by her secretary.)
"Here we are ma'am.
Miss Gharida, this lady wants to talk to the Vice Principal about founding a school."
(Gharida looks up.)
"Please come in, ma'am. We are honoured to have you here."

*She smiles at the porter.*
Thank you.
*Julia walks in and looks at the secretary.*
Thank you. I was told to talk to the Vice-Principal about this. Is she in?

"She is. Please wait here a moment."
(Gharida stands and opens the door beside her desk, and looks in.)
"Ma'am? Julia of Hillsdown is here asking to speak to you about starting a new school."
(A voice from insiide speaks.) "She is? Then I will see her in two minutes."
(Gharida turns back to Julia, closing the door.) "Can you wait a short while ma'am? Vice-Principal Tordesh will see you in two minutes."

I can, thank you. *she sits down. Isobel climbs down into Julia's lap, demanding to be petted. *

(After a short wait - maybe two minutes, maybe slightly longer - the door opens and a Dwarven woman puts her head out.)
"Julia of Hillsdown? Thank you for waiting. Please come in."
(She holds the door open for Julia to enter.)

*Isobel jumps out of Julia's lap, and goes exploring the office of the Vice-Principal. Julia walks in after the kitten.*
Thank you for seeing me, Vice-Principal.

"Please sit down."
(She goes round to her side of the desk and sits down, looking at Julia.)
"Gharida said something about founding a school? Suppose you tell me a little about it? purposes and so on.
Oh, I hope the cat is well-behaved."
(There are several large filing cabinets in the room, many of which have piles of paper or other files on. There is also a small fireplace against the right-hand wall.
Tordesh's desk sits in the centre of the room close enougn to the fire to be warmed by it.)

*Isobel mews, insulted. Of course she is.
Julia sits down.*
I don't know whether you've heard, but the Church recently opened up departments in the poorer sections of the city. There's not much of a school in those sections, and I was planning on setting some up, connected to the churches there, but I don't have much experience with them.

(Tordesh nods.)
"No, there are so many details.
What sort of level are you aiming to teach? Basic elementary schooling? High school or equivalent? Children only, or adults too? They all have their different problems.
You are aiming in the poorer quarters? I know there are several schools in Greyfriars and Erebos.
Obtaining premises might actually be the least problem you face, although making sure your buildings are usable..." (she shudders a minute.)
"And the practical problems of keeping the place going - finding skilled teachers, paying them, school books, discipline and so on. And the money to fund them. Where will that come from?"

Basic for now. Anything higher we'll have to see whether people want it. Primarily children, but if the adults want to get an education, then we'll aim to teach them too.
I hadn't heard that. I haven't looked into them yet, thank you for telling me.
*She smiles.*
Of course we'll make sure of that.
Money won't be the problem. Finding the right people who want to teach there will be. How do I go about that?

(Tordesh nods.)
"Better to concentrate on the children at first.
The qualiy of education offered by thise schools is variable. Some teachers are really very good, some are just timeservers. Very few such schools are well administered. Of course there is the Chantery in Greyfriars, but that serves a different purpose.
Finding motivated staff? That is very difficult for me to say. We don't usually have much trouble here, but magic, arcane or divine, tends to attract a group of people more interested than the average in learning, and imparting that learning to others.
One thing I will say I have observed. People from poorer backgrounds are often more motivated to succeeed in the classroom, because they see education as the way out of the poverty trap - an escape hatch from their parents lifestyle. Very often those same parents are the most willing to make sacrifices to get their children through school. Maybe you can find some people from that background who are willing to help others by teaching what they have learned?"
