Welcome my dear Please take my hand It's wonderful here It's really quite grand The moment still Await the hour The Masquerade for Time's dead flowers
Dancing and reeling We move beneath shadows We've hung from the ceiling All memory receding Take leave of all reason In step with the bleeding
Chapter & Verse The lyrics take flight Red is the day as Red is the night The hours pass The years expire The dance goes on We spin on fire
Laughing and screaming A wide-awake nightmare Diseased and believing In mourning-deceiving Ever in motion and ever in grieving
Welcome my dear Please take my hand It's wonderful here It's really quite grand
Dancing and reeling We move beneath shadows We've hung from the ceiling All memory receding Take leave of all reason In step with the bleeding
Shadows now descending To join in the Madness The song never-ending The wounds never mending Wretched in countenance The fear not transcending

BANGBANGBANG
Silence.
BANGBANGBANG
Jakobim is woken roughly from his sleep. He finds himself half conscious and half dressed in a filthy bed in a dark room. It smells like liquor, vomit and filth here.
BANGBANGBANG
"Get your ass out of bed!" a rough male voice shouts through the door, "You owe me! Pay up!"

What the Hells?
Jakobim sits up and rubs his eyes. He can't remember what he owes this guy for, nor can he recall where he is.
He stands, looks around briefly for a shirt, gives up, and opens the door.

"You owe-" the man, a heavy, balding man in his forties or fifties with a thin beard and several pockmarks on his face, stops mid-shout when Jakobim opens up. He frowns and glances suspiciously into the room behind him. "You're not Faber." he says, suspiciously and accusingly.
Behind the man, Jakobim can see a narrow, filthy hallway leading down a ways before it leads into a staircase going up. He is in an extremely cheap apartment, situated in the basement of a large building. The kind of apartment where you share the bathroom with everyone on the corridor, the kind you can rent from anywhere between an hour and forever. The kind where they didn't clean up after the last person who stayed in your room. Or the one before that.
Someone throws a door open a little further down the corridor. Out comes a girl with bright red hair, cut like a boy, and big brown eyes. She is dressed like a workman, with a brown jacket, brown breeches, and an overlarge brown cap in her hand, which she pulls over her red hair after locking the door behind her. She gives both the man and Jakobim a defensive glare. He knows her, having been here maybe two or three days. They call her Fey, and she lives here permanently. She always dresses like this.

Jakobim shakes his head and rubs his eyes again.
"No, not Faber. Jakobim."
He glances over at Fey when she exits her room and nods in greeting.

The man curses nastily, pokes his head in to have a quick look at Jakobim's room, and curses again. He instantly turns and dashes away, up the stairs. Fey rolls her eyes and finishes hiding her bright hair in the cap. She nods back at Jakobim, if a little curtly.

Jakobim raises an eyebrow. When the man leaves, Jakobim gestures quizzically in his direction and turns to Fey, perhaps for clarification.

The man has disappeared up the stairs and Fey is moving to follow suit when Jakobim gestures at her. She turns to him a little annoyedly.
"What?"

"You know who that was?"

"Nope."
Fey heads for the stairs and starts climbing them.

Jakobim watches her for a moment. He starts to follow her, changes his mind, and reenters his room. He gathers up his belongings and makes his way toward the exit.

By the time Jakobim reemerges from his room, Fey is long gone. The stairs he climbs up are dreary. They don't smell any better than his room did. The little lobby he moves into isn't much better either.
There is a counter with a board for keys behind it, but that is about it. A fat woman sits behind the counter in her pink bathrobe and with curlers in her hair. She hangs semi-consciously over a large mug of coffee that is so incredibly strong, the smell hits Jakobim in the nose the moment he steps into the lobby.
The exit is a narrow door of forged steel and thick, foggy glass, the kind used in bathrooms. It has a little copper bell attached to it as a shop would, but someone appears to have secured the clapper with toilet paper and chewing tobacco.

Jakobim stumbles, still not entirely awake, through the lobby and out the door.

The door creaks. The woman pays him no attention, probably unable to. He finds himself on the streets, where it is heavily foggy, as usual. He cannot even see the houses on the other side.

Jakobim pauses, not entirely sure why he headed out in the first place. With a mental shrug, he heads off down the road, looking for a tavern. Or a library. Anywhere.
