And I would die to protect you, or the little ones. But I still don't think we will. Not untill we both have a few more centuries under our belts.
*She still holds on to him, trying to comfort him.*

He smiles weakly, and holds her at arm's length.
Don't you die. I don't want you to.
He frowns slightly.
If... If I get killed... I don't plan to, Taerlin, but just in case. If that happens, please promise me to live on to a ripe old happy age- walk away from the fight- and, perhaps, take some care of the little ones? Please?
He gives her a very thorough look.

My promise about your fate if you die still holds, Eskel.
*She pauses for a moment, frowning herself.*
I promise I will take care of the children, Eskel. But I pray - no, I know - that it won't be nessicary. We are both going to survive this.

I know.
He takes her chin in one hand and looks straight at her.
But if I fall, I won't be there to protect you any longer. Then you just walk away, you hear me? Just walk away. I don't want to die knowing you're in danger.

*She looks back at him for a long moment before answering.*
I understand. I will. I promise.

He smiles at her.
Thank you.
Leans in and kisses her again.

He breaks off the kiss and just looks at her for a while.
... then the gods favour me after all.
Chuckles.
Do you know I don't even know your last name, or your age, or where you live... It could be your birthday tomorrow and I'd never know I missed it.
He glances at the window and notices the sun has already set a while ago.
It's getting rather late- I'm going to have to try to get those two to bed...

*When he makes the comment about not knowing her name, age, where she lived, a pained look crosses over her eyes, but it passes quickly, and she smiles warmly at him.*
I understand. I have to get going soon, too. I haven't seen Chessa all day - if I don't see her before work tommorrow, she'll have my hide.
*Though she doesn't say anything else, she ignores the comment about name and age so loudly she might as well have pointed a finger at it.*

He looks at her pensively and runs the back his hand softly over her cheek, then gets up.
I'll walk you home then.

*She smiles, not just in appreciation for the gesture, but glad he didn't press the issue.*
Thank you.
*Again, the thanks is for more than one thing.*

Don't worry about it.
He walks to the door and opens it.
Alright you two, playtime is over! Come on and clean this mess up, you have to get some sleep.
The children run in, giggling like mad at their brother. When they stop, they look at Taerlin, and get another giggling fit. Eskel closes the door, but they run through the room, jump up on the chairs, try to eat some more cake.
Hey! Cut that out! You've got to go to-
Narwain laughs and throws a piece of cake at Eskel, which he narrowly avoids. Seeing as they're in one of those moods, he grabs Taerlin's hand and drags her out of the apartment before they both end up covered in birthday cake.

He comes home and gets jumped.
You're early you're early are we moving now?
No, no, we're- UMPH!
He gets hit in the stomache by a very entusiastic embrace from his little sister and hoists her up on his arm.
We're going on a vacation.
Both kids blink. A what?
... a vacation. A trip. You've already got your clothes packed, just get them, okay?
He puts her back on the floor and quickly packs his own things- mainly school books.
Can I bring Cheddar?
Yes you can bring Cheddar, hurry up.
They quickly assemble their hand luggage, then Eskel ushers them into the hallway, locks the door behind them, and takes his siblings' hands and takes them along.

They come back home and the children start packing the last things while Eskel goes and gets a trolley. The children are more of a hurricane than a help, but they try. Eventually, rolling all over each other, their furniture is piled up on the trolley, mostly taken apart from convenience (there's not a lot of it, though), and the backpacks are back on the backs. Narwain carries Cheddar's box under one arm, Eskel's school rucksack on his back, and a bag with toys in his other hand. Lotheg holds some pots and pans in the bag on her back, is clutching her drawing equipment and doll under her arms. Eskel is carrying- well, the rest, and dragging the trolley.
Okay you lot, take a good look. Today, we're leaving.
Dispite of their exhaustion, the kids cheer, and they leave the apartment. Eskel glances over his shoulder once more. How he hated this place- his home for over thirty years. Loth was born here- not long after they moved here... One of the most beautiful things he'd ever seen, and she'd brought such happiness to the devastated home. His parents had died here. Not much later, in fact. He remembers that... The nights, the confused cries of delirium, the smell. They had died within two nights after each other... His mother, already weakened by Loth's birth, had died first. And then Adar had just- given up... He'd brought them to what passed for a grave from here, baby on his arm, toddler by the hand. So many sleepless nights of studying and worrying over money trouble, his siblings' education, their childhood illnesses... He hated when they were ill, he hated illness. He remembers how they both had scarlet fever one time. Sat up with them for nights on end, worrying himself to death. Gods, what would he do without them? He remembers his fear for them, and his relief when the fever faded away, and they were smiling again. He smiles- there were many good things, here, too. Lotheg getting her first tooth, learning how to walk. Narwain with Cheddar, Narwain running through the room making a mess in his extatic pleasure at learning to read his own name. Birthday parties... Taerlin. He smiles and pulls the door shut behind him. He hated this place- but it had been home. He leads the children through the halls, leaves the key with the landlord. Goodbye Paradise! No more... Never again. Pulling the trolley through the hot streets, the tiny family makes for Asphodelos.

Shadow parts from shadow, a figure of darkness stepping out of the dark. As it does so, the figure's coloration changes from black to pale skin, as the man solidifies after his travels.
He walks over and takes a seat in one of the tattered chairs in the area, shaking his head. What a fool...
He heard children playing in another room. Otherwise, this place was as silent as the grave. He frowned and listened for more noises, but that was it.
Hmph.
He leaned back in the chair and stared at the roof, listening to the voices.
