He sits and thinks a while. He needed some cash to pay off the intermediaries - so the book was out as he could not get enough with it. Would they quibble over 5,000 gp?
"The staff and 40,000 jink."
His tone clearly indicates that this is his final offer.

Done.
Verification. My friend knows someone capable of casting the necessary spells to verify this book. Also (he smiles) you have a reputation to keep up as an honest broker. If you gyp my friend, word will get around.
What surety do you requite?

.oO(He does not know the half of it. Of course, Kerys is only a facade, but he does have that reputation. I wouldn't want to trash it for momentary satisfaction. And as for them...)
"Let's just say that your friend's employer would be mightily miffed if word was spread that he (personally) gypped people. He might do something nasty to your friend. And you."
(A grin spreads slowly across his face.)
"Of course if said employer was to personally assure me that the book is what you say..."

* Gendorial maintained a smooth face, but a very discerning watcher might have noticed a slight hesitation before he replied. A very discerning watcher. *
I cannot possibly say. I would have to ask my friend and find out if he can approach his employer.

"Of course. Perhaps tomorrow, here? Bring the items, and we can finalise the trade on the spot.
If he cannot, then I will find someone else to verify. That will cost you an extra" - he pauses to think - "5,000 jink"
Again his tone implies that this is not negotiable.

* Gendorial nods and rises. *
Until tomorrow then?
* He slips out by one of the back doors. *

"Until tomorrow"
He leaves a different way to Gendorial's.

* Gendorial enters the bar openly and walks up to buy a drink. As he pays, he is instructed to go to one of the private rooms at the back.
It seems that Gendorial walks to a table in the middle of the room and sits drinking. In actuality he walks along the room, into the back area and selects an opened room, where he takes his place. *

He arrives with two bodyguards and a wizard. He leaves the guards drinking in teh bar and goes into the back.
"Alone, Gendorial? Have you the goods?"

* Gendorial looks up and lays the staff he is carrying and a bag on the table. *
Here are the agreed objects for the transaction fees. Please feel free to verify them.

He watches as the wizard casts a spell to check the staff. The wizard nods.
He checks the money quickly, and smiles. Taking a book from his backpack he places it on the table.
"Well, they seem to be in order. Now, here is the Manual All we need now is the Libram. And of course your friend's employer."

* Merestil stepped out of the shadows. *
Hello there. You were waiting for me I believe?
* He too places a book on the table. *
This is the Libram of Gainful Conjuration. May I?
* He gestures to the other book. *

He nods, and reaches for the other book. Receiving Merestil's nod he passes it to the wizard, who again casts spells on the book; these take some time, far longer than the verification of the staff.

* Merestil picks the other book up, turns it over in his hands for a minute or so, then puts it down with a satisfied nod. They wait for the verification of the other book, a process which takes hours.
Vinnie serves refreshments at one point during the long wait. *

Finally the other wizard sets the book down, and looks at Kerys.
"It is one of the Librams. There is no way to distinguish between them except by reading them."
Kerys nods. "Thank you my friend. That suffices."
He takes the book, pushing the other to Merestil. "That concludes our business."
He then lifts a pouch from his belt and tosses it to the wizard, picks up the Staff and the money, and leaves the room, followed by the wizard.
