*He thinks a bit, then shakes his head* I don't understand that. The light is good, it's nice. I don't like the dark... *Climbs on Mellinore's lap* Now that is weird. So you have to love other people better than yourself and the stars? Why? What have they ever done for you? I'm sure you wouldn't ever do something so silly. Nor nana either. (Took Tirith onto his lap.) .oO (What has he taught this boy?) Why is it silly to love other people better than yourself? Or to only do good things for people who first do good things for you? Because then everyone would just sit huddled in their own little world, glaring miserably at each other. No, it is far harder to voluntarily give something up, or even die, than to keep what you want for yourself and never mind the other fellow. Far harder."

If it's harder, why do it? Doesn't make sense.
*Pokes Mellinore in the stomach*
Well, would you die for other people? Would nana or adar?

Because sometimes it's the only thing left to do.

"You do it, even though it is harder, because the rewards are greater."
(Looks him in the eye.) "Yes Tirith. If I had to. If by dying I could save somebody from death, or from damnation, or gain something for them, I would.
As for your nana and your adar - I know they have risked death for themselves so that other people might be saved from horrible deaths. People they did not even know."

So everything you do, you do for rewards? That seems weird too, somehow.
*Blinks*
You would? They have? Why? I don't understand...

*She yawns and gets up*
You don't have to right now. It's time I got you to bed.
*He protests, saying he's not at all sleepy, but she picks her handkerchief and parcel up, then picks him up, says goodbye to the others, and takes him to the inn*

(He smiled at them.) "Goodngth Tirith. Gooodnight daeriell."
(He looked at Julia.)
"The education of the young...
No need to ask where he got that kind of thought from. And none of it good. I pray that we might be able to show him the rewards of virtue. Although perhaps I should not have used that word."

*she shrugs.*
With the current company, he'll learn through example soon enough.
*she smiles.*
But you're right, reward's not the best word to be used in situations like this. I doubt any of us thought of that when we were helping each other.

(He lay back and looked at the evening sky for a while, watching the stars emerge.)
"No, I should not have used that word. I just pray it does not undermine everything else I said."

He's young, give him time. Even if he did get the wrong impression today, then it can still be corrected later on.
